Obituary For Henry Allen Maines

Henry A. Maines

Born in Winchester, Kentucky May 15, 1946

Died in San Diego, California on September 30, 2023

Henry Allen “Inky” Maines was born in the small town of Winchester, Kentucky to Eddie Belle Davis Maines and James Isaac Maines Senior in 1946. He lived the life of a small-town boy, running around with neighborhood friends and family, getting into mischief as any youngster would, and graduating from George Rogers Clark High School in 1964. He enlisted in the Navy in 1964, just as the Vietnam war was escalating, starting his career as an Aviation Mechanic, and subsequently transferring to the Aviation Storekeeper (AK) rating.

He was stationed overseas in Guam and then in the Philippines where he met his first wife Rosalina. Together they had two sons in addition to her two daughters from a prior marriage. He loved them all as his own children and formally adopted the eldest daughter, Marietta (Marissa) several years later. After his divorce from Rosalina, Henry met and married Carrie Hogue in 1979 and they were a happy and devoted couple for the next 44 years residing most of their time together in San Diego.

Henry rapidly rose through the ranks and was selected for Warrant Officer (CWO2) in 1983, but opted to remain as an E-8, Senior Chief Aviation Storekeeper (AKCS) and retire at that rank to avoid having to uproot his family from where they were stationed at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, Washington. Upon retirement from the military, Henry once again chose to serve his country by becoming a civil servant (specializing in aviation logistics) for the Navy. He assisted many military personnel and civilians in researching and resolving problems to further the Navy’s mission and support deployed units.

In his private time, he pursued hobbies including rebuilding cars, golfing, home improvements, coin collecting and genealogy research of his family. He was especially proud of his 1923 Buick and his 1955 T-Bird which he rebuilt from the ground up. When he could, he would visit his friends and family back in Kentucky and still maintained close bonds with childhood friends including Dewey Pope and Donnie Watts.

Sadly, Henry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in spring 2023 and remained in home hospice care with the support of his wife, Carrie and grandson, Nathan Maines. He has left a huge void in everyone’s hearts as we all miss the love and laughter, he shared with everyone. He passed at home on September 30, 2023 surrounded by family and was buried at Miramar National Cemetery on October 12, 2023 with full military honors.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie; sons, Henry Reola and his wife Anna, and John M. Maines and his wife, Rebeka Maines; and grandchildren: Austin Reola, Ashley Reola, Nathan Maines, Nina Maines & Nolan Maines; and Levi, Jered, Danielle and Elisa Fritts; siblings: Alberta Maines Baker, Earl Maines, Mary Maines-Brinegar & her husband Paul, and John E. Maines; sister in law Irene Hogue, niece Shannon her husband Alex and their daughter, Lilly, along with many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Marissa Campanella; sisters, Pearl Potts and Katherine Abner and brothers, James Jr., George, and Joe and countless friends and shipmates along the way. His sister in law, Tarsa (John E.'s wife), passed away a few weeks after Henry's memorial.

We ask that any donations in Henry’s memory go to any cancer foundations which help people in need, among them, Shirley’s Way of Kentucky.
